Responses: What’s in your kitchen?
A few weeks ago I asked you what you ALWAYS have in your kitchen. The results are in!
- Vinegars — balsamic, apple cider, rice wine, and white
- Oils — olive and vegetable
- Onions
- Garlic
- Spices (a variety)
- Cheese
- Chicken
- Fresh produce, of course
- Pasta (I’m including cous cous here…)
- Ground turkey
- Rice
- Canned beans
- Chicken broth
- Hurricane Food: milk, bread, eggs

A few of you had some more out-of-the-ordinary items… Jonathan keeps fish sauce and ginger on hand at all times while Talya, a mother of two, is never without hotdogs, chicken nuggets, and PB&J fixins. Kelli always has a rotisserie chicken in her fridge! Definitely out of the ordinary, but a great idea. I’m sure this saves a ton of time when you’re making week-night meals. Not every kitchen is the same and everyone’s idea of a “quick” meal is different.
Mark Bittman, food writer and Ona’s secret crush (oops…), recently did a post on the 10-Ingredient Shopping List. He says that you can prepare meals for five days with just 10 ingredients: chicken breasts, bacon, shrimp, spinach, tomatoes, ginger, onions, asparagus, mushrooms, and bread. I think that sounds completely possible, but those items aren’t everyone’s preference. I, for one, don’t eat bacon and I don’t care for tomatoes. I know that Talya’s two little girls probably wouldn’t be too enthused with many of those ingredients.
With the list that we have compiled and a few fruits and vegetables, I think we can easily prepare simple meals for a week. Any recipe ideas using only what is listed above?
