Oh baby, that’s a big pancake! Plus, cast iron 101.

My family loves the Original Pancake House. There is one in Charlotte that we all go to every time we’re home. It is our Sunday morning tradition. The Pancake House has two star items on their menu — the apple pancake (ordered regularly by many in my family) and the Dutch baby pancake.  Everything at [...]

Best Thing I Ever Ate

I knew all of my readers had excellent taste (read the comments for the full stories): Matt N –  Deep fried Twinkies.  I had two of them at Bub’s BBQ in Sunderland, MA – the food of the gods … and the heart attack of the devil. Micah (@captainmicahp) — Terrine of foie gras and [...]

Survey: Best thing you ever ate?

There’s this show on the Food Network called “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.”  The chef-stars talk about things they’ve eaten in restaurants that were outstanding.  Some fancy stuff, some junk-foody stuff… usually a range. So it got me thinking about the best thing that I’ve ever eaten.  I think I have my answer(s), but [...]

Phixing Phyllo Apple Pie

We were invited to brunch at a friend’s new house and were asked to bring a dessert.  I was glad to bring whatever they needed as long as I was bringing something.  But bringing a dessert to brunch posed a bit of a challenge.  Dinner desserts can be anything — heavy or light, rich or [...]

Spaetzle Fo Shizzle

To me, the ultimate cooking accomplishment is making something from scratch. Something that you would usually purchase pre-made. Something like pasta. It is one of those things that I know tastes better made from scratch, but it also tastes just fine out of a box and tastes pretty darn good when I buy the fancy [...]

BREAKING NEWS: Baking Contest Results are in

This just in: Baking contest judges at unspecified federal agency wouldn’t know a good cookie if it hit them in the face. (That wouldn’t happen because cookies are nice and don’t hit.) My cookies won “Best Presentation” in their category.  Something lemon and not chocolate won best cookie.  Best presentation? My cookies were pretty but [...]

Top Chef — Office Holiday Party Style

Last year my husband casually mentioned that part of his office holiday party (read: cookies and egg nog for an hour during the work day) was a bake-off. Three categories — cookies, cakes, pies & other. A contest. I love contests. I don’t really bake (although every meal needs a dessert), but sign me up. [...]

Snow and Meatball Subs

Mike and I had plans to meet a friend for dinner at Sichuan Pavilion, our new favorite Sichuan restaurant in Rockville (I’ll tell you more about it after I actually get back there). Unfortunately, the meteorologists who are almost always wrong about snow in this area were very right. Rather than trekking up to Rockville, [...]

Wrapping up my first CSA experience

On November 21 I picked up my final CSA box for the season. I was sad. I was very sad, in fact. Before I get into my feelings and thoughts on the entire experience, here are the contents of that final box: two big leeks head of broccoli potatoes acorn squash lettuce kale fall salad [...]

Post T-Day, Let’s Dish

Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, I say the same thing. “Why do we only make this meal once a year?” I understand that once a year is what makes it a Holiday that we all look forward to, but this food is insanely good! It seem like turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, [...]

@LSlayden I've heard mixed opinions on those. Plus, Keurigs are WAY more expensive than a Senseo, for example.
