Buy Local Challenge
Could you go an entire week just eating local food? It would certainly be an adjustment. The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) and their partners have set up the Buy Local Challenge. They are challenging us to eat just one local item each day for a week starting tomorrow (July 17). Just one item? That’s easy especially for foodies like us! So let’s kick it up a few notches!
Marylanders, Virginians, Washingtonians, everyone from coast to coast! Challenge yourself to eat more local food than you already are every day for the next week. Set a goal. One local item with every meal? One fully local meal each day? Push yourself — you can do it!
Here is my goal: I will use only local produce, meats, and dairy in my cooking this week. In addition to my usual box of CSA goodies, I think I’m going to check out Lewis Orchards this weekend. Looks like a cool market.
Post a comment or send me an email (eatniks at gmail) with your personal goal. Then we’ll check in at the end of the week to see how everyone did. Send me recipes that worked for you, farms that you like, anything that might help someone else!
Good luck — and have fun!

My goal is to eat at least one local item each day — most days I have been able to exceed that small goal, which makes me feel good. I cooked a couple great mostly local meals this weekend, but found that during the week it’s much more difficult. All local for all meals just isn’t possible for me all the time (particularly in the morning, as I haven’t seen any coffee plantations in Maryland ;). I’ll post later this week on what’s worked well for me for the challenge. Looking forward to tips from others!
